Kachina Doll
Kachina Dolls - Eagle Dancer
For hundreds of years, Kachinas have been a sacred part of the Hopi people who live in Northern Arizona. During annual Kachina ceremonies, the dolls were given as gifts to young girls and were considered sacred objects not toys. They were used to teach children about the Kachina spirits within the Hopi religion. Well over 300 different Kachinas have been identified and each one symbolizes a particular sacred spirit.

Originally, the were carved from cottonwood or cactus root, painted in symbolic colors and dressed in traditional costumes. Birds have always played a very important part in the Hopi ceremonies and their feathers were used to decorate the Kachinas.

Today, many Hopis continue the tradition and make their livings carving Kachina dolls, preserving this ancient art form for us to enjoy today.
