1880s J. C. Davis’ Old Soap Victorian Advertising Trade Card – J.C. Davis & Sons, Boston MA - Original “Smiley Face” Kite and Doll - 18th C Children

1880's Victorian chromo-lithographic advertising trade card for "J. C. Davis' Old Soap", claimed to be the best toilet or laundry detergent bar soap on the market – and manufactured by J.C. Davis & Sons of Boston MA.

Image features children in 18th C dress – a girl with a doll and a boy with a kite decorated with a "smiley face".  "J.C. Davis Old Soap" is over-printed in red on the front near the bottom of the card.  The back has printed advertising copy listing nine claims made by Davis for its product.

The brightly colored lithograph image is signed "Bufford" in the lower left corner, and has the number "810" printed in the right. Founded in 1844 by well-known Boston lithographer John Henry Bufford (1810-1870)  of J. H. Bufford & Co., a quality Boston lithographic company that remained in business after Bufford's death, and operated by his sons until at least the mid 1880s.

Stock trading card measures 4" high x 3/1/8" wide.

PHOTO NOTE: Small defects are exaggerated by the scanning process, and many are barely noticeable when viewed in person. The photos also distort the clarity of the images and sometimes the intensity of the colors.  The muted "grainy" look is a distortion.  The colors are often more vivid and the clarity greater when viewed in person.

CONDITION NOTE: LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE ATTACHED PHOTOS. Condition is accurately shown. This stock trade card is in near mint condition. The images on the front are very clean. There are no tears or creases, and the corners are only very slightly blunted. The back is very clean with little, if any, glue residue. The advertising copy is complete, sharp and readable. ALL DEFECTS ARE VISIBLE IN THE PHOTOS.
