1909 Romantic Couple Glossy Lacquer Postcard – Auburn-Haired Girl in Shawl with Beau – “It Feels Good Around the Neck” – German-Made - Theo. Eismann Co., Leipzig, Publisher's Comet Logo

Vintage 1909 color lithograph photo postcard in glossy lacquer finish, framed with matte gold leaf gilt paint.  Image captioned “It feels good around the neck.”, is that of a smiling auburn-haired young girl wearing a white shawl, with her arm firmly around her young man beau’s neck.  She definitely appears pretty satisfied with her catch! Along the left side of the photo is the legend “Photo only copyrighted 1909 by Theodor Eismann, New York”.

The back has the imprint of the company logo - a comet with the company script initials (Th. E. L.) – for publisher Theodor Eismann of Leipzig, Germany, and is labeled “Th. E., L. -  Theochrom-Comic-Series No. 1131/39", and “Printed in Germany. Theochrom was the name of Eismann’s glossy lacquer finish printing process. A person’s name has been written in the upper left of the gilt border on the front.

The back features a 1909 Ipswich MA postmark, a Brooklyn NYC address, and a handwritten message that appears to be in Polish.

PHOTO NOTE:  Scanning frequently distorts the clarity of the image and the intensity of color.  When viewed in person, the card image usually has greater clarity and color intensity, compared to the more muted "grainy" look of the scan.  In this instance, viewed in person, the actual postcard image is sharply defined with a shiny surface.  The diagonal colored lines visible in the scanned image are an imaging distortion.  The actual reverse-side is much lighter in color, and slight smudges and spots have been exaggerated by the scans.

CONDITION:  Standard-sized (3-1/2” x 5-1/2”) glossy lacquer finished color lithograph photo divided-back postcard, with a gold gilt frame - in generally good condition, but not perfect.  There is generalized wear and light abrasions on the front (most noticeable on the gilt frame), and light soiling on the back. Two corners have reinforced creases, and there is one repaired margin tear on the left side, and one light horizontal surface crease across the top of the card.  The message, address, postmark, stamp and cancellation are all clearly legible.  ALL FLAWS ARE OBVIOUS IN THE PHOTOS.
