Description:

Two c1880s Victorian Album Small English Literature Advertising Trade Card Scraps – British Authors Alford Lord Tennyson & William Shakespeare Homes - Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, England & Aldworth, Surry

Two c1880s Victorian scrap album “English literary history” stock advertising trade card scraps. The first is the home of the famous 16th Century English literature author William Shakespeare in Stratford-on-Avon in Warwickshire England. The second is the home of the famous 19th Century English literature author Alfred Lord Tennyson at Aldworth in Surrey, England.  These are two of a series of stock trade cards featuring the homes of famous authors.

Both are captioned below the center of the image, and each has a facsimile of the author’s signature. Both bear the same lithographer’s logo - an “R” inside a triangle – followed by different numbers. The lithographer’s name is unknown.

The Shakespeare stock card has trimmed advertising copy for “Bean’s Patent Folding Sofa-Bed”, including a nice monotone lithograph image of the bed. It measures 4-1/2” x 2-3/4”. The Tennyson card - slightly larger, measuring 5-1/4” x 2-3/4” - is blank.

PHOTO NOTE: Scanning frequently distorts the clarity of the image and the intensity of color. When viewed in person, this card image has greater clarity and color intensity, compared to the more muted "grainy" look of the scanned image. Slight discolorations and minor defects are also exaggerated in scanned images, and most are actually much less noticeable when viewed in person.

CONDITION NOTE:  LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE ATTACHED PHOTO. Condition is accurately shown. These are very nice images with wonderful detail and warm pastel colors - but not perfect. The SHAKESPEARE card has some color loss along the ridge of the roof (as well a stray spot or two elsewhere); a reinforced vertical fold left of center ending in a repaired tear at the bottom of the card; a reinforced lower left corner fold; and a trimmed lower edge. The TENNYSON card has a diagonal patch of paper wear in the white border area to the lower right of the image; a short repaired tear on the upper border; and a light stain in the lower left corner. Both have glue stains on the back where they were attached to the scrap album. ALL DEFECTS ARE VISIBLE IN THE PHOTO.
