One hundred years ago, on July 2, 1913, Mansfielder, Civil War Union
veteran and my great-grandfather, Benedict Kuneman, mailed a postcard
from Gettysburg, Pa., to James Kuneman, his son and my maternal
grandfather, who lived on Altamont Avenue in Mansfield. My mother Helen —
James and Margaret Hans Kuneman’s second child, born on March 25, the
day of the big flood — was little more than three months old.
