When was printed the first hotel luggage label? No one knows and possibly no one ever will! A study of old travel scrapbooks shows that in the 1880s people used to make passable hotel labels out of cut letterheads and other printed paper items that included the image (or then just the name) of the hotel.  The oldest true label in my collection is for the Grand Hotel de Dunkerque in Brussels and can be dated to the period from 1873 (when the hotel reopened in the buildings of the Leopold Baths) to 1877. You could say Charles “Skip” Culleiton wrote the book on postcards. The author of “Greetings from the A-K Valley” spent 10 years visiting antiques shops, postcard shows, libraries and museums to collect images of postcards from everywhere from Arnold to Winfield.  He teamed with postcard dealer Mike Krafick to host a postcard show at Allegheny-Kiski Valley Historical Society's Heritage Museum. Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, a pioneering photographer rigged what could be described as the world's first drone to capture incredible images of American cities from thousands of feet in the air..George R. Lawrence used a system of kites outfitted with a 49-pound camera to show a bird's-eye view of San Francisco, Chicago and New York City - among other towns - in a way that they had never been seen before. His 1906 pictures of earthquake-devastated San Francisco became world-famous and made him a rich man. Complete Story

Some stretches of the historic coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway over the next week could look like a scene straight out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Two processions of Model Ts, Model As and other cars are setting out this weekend, making their way from New York and San Francisco to the midpoint of Kearney, Neb., to celebrate the 100th year of the Lincoln Highway, considered to be the nation's first transcontinental highway.
